AAA Editor Notes
The Capitol is at the e. end of Duke of Gloucester St. at the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area, off I-64 exit 238. The current structure represents the first capitol, which was built in 1701 and reconstructed during the 1930s. The Capitol was the site of many important political events. The most significant of these took place May 15, 1776, when Virginia’s legislators—nearly 2 months before the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia—voted for delegates in Philadelphia to introduce a resolution declaring the Colonies’ independence from England.
