AAA Editor Notes
Westover Plantation is off SR 5 at 7000 Westover Rd. An outstanding example of Georgian architecture, this plantation home fronting the James River was built in the mid-18th-century by the William Byrd family. Visitors can stroll the grounds, which feature a row of 150-year-old tulip poplars, cast-iron gates and a formal walled garden established around 1900. Other outbuildings include an ice house, a necessary house, an old kitchen and an escape tunnel built after a Native American massacre in 1622.

Brochures for a self-guiding walking tour of the grounds are available at the gate. The house can be toured during Historic Garden Week in late April and during the Autumn Pilgrimage in September.

Guided tours are available.
