Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point State Park is 10 mi. w. of Friday Harbor via Beaverton Valley Rd., West Valley Rd. and Mitchell Bay Rd. to 1567 Westside Rd. Covering 41 acres, Lime Kiln is a living museum of natural and cultural history. Its name derives from the vicinity's former lime kiln operations. A 1.6-mile hiking trail loops through the park, traversing meadows, open woodlands and rocky shores. Look for outcrops of prickly pear, the northernmost species of cactus, and the shaggy-barked Pacific madrone, a beautiful broadleaf evergreen.

The trail overlooks Haro Strait, waters favored by orca and minke whales and Dall's porpoise, and is an excellent vantage point for whale sightings (most likely to occur May through September). Lime Kiln Lighthouse was built in 1919; it is closed to the public except for guided tours on selected days during the summer. The trail continues to a restored lime kiln that operated until 1923. Both the park visitor center and the lighthouse have interpretive displays.
