AAA Editor Notes
Kubota Garden is in South Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood at 9817 S. 55th Ave. In 1927 Japanese emigrant Fujitaro Kubota bought 5 acres of logged-off swampland and created a family garden that was for many years a center for social and cultural activities in Seattle's Japanese community. This 20-acre site is now a city historical landmark and a serene haven open to the public.

Gravel paths wind among conifers, rhododendrons, Japanese red maples, various shrubs and flowering perennials. The Tom Kubota Stroll Garden has places to sit and admire a striking Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar with powdery silver-blue needles on gracefully drooping branches. The Mountainside, built by the Kubota family to celebrate the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, features waterfalls, carved stones and carefully arranged plantings.

Guided tours are available.
