AAA Editor Notes
Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge is 4.5 mi. w. on US 101, 3 mi. n. on Kitchen Dick Rd., then n. to 554 Voice of America Rd. The refuge contains one of the longest natural sand spits in the United States. Dungeness Spit is about 5.5 miles long—and growing—and juts into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It forms a saltwater lagoon that is used as a rest stop by thousands of migratory waterfowl.

The 63-foot-tall New Dungeness Lighthouse, near the end of the spit, is accessible by boat or a 11 mile round-trip hike that is best undertaken at low tide. A viewing platform with a high-powered telescope overlooks the bay. Clamming, crabbing and fishing are permitted in season, subject to state and refuge regulations.

Refuge regulations prohibit fires, pets, bicycles, flying objects and camping. Other restrictions apply; see the refuge manager. No vehicles are allowed; visitors must park near the refuge entrance and hike in.

Guided tours are available.
