AAA Editor Notes
Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail can be accessed at the corner of 6th St. and Milwaukee Ave. in South Cle Elum. The linear park encompasses 212 miles of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, which follows a historic railway line along the scenic Yakima River and over the Cascades into western Washington. The park includes 110 miles of hiking, biking and horse trails and winds through fir and pine forests, negotiates rolling farmlands and steep canyons, runs atop lofty railroad trestles and even ventures into tunnels along the way. Cross-country skiing is popular in winter; a Sno-Park permit is required November 15 through April 30.

The trailhead is part of the South Cle Elum Rail Yard National Historic District. Information panels along the Rail Yard Trail, which loops through the site, describe area history. The former Milwaukee Road Depot now functions as an interpretive center.

A waiver form (available at each tunnel entrance) is required to enter the tunnel.

Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
