Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is at 1300 1st Ave. (enter on 1st Ave. at the corner of Union St.). Jonathan Borofsky's 48-foot-tall, kinetic steel sculpture “Hammering Man” greets visitors outside the entrance. SAM's superbly eclectic collection encompasses American, European, African, Native American and ancient Mediterranean art. The three floors of exhibits are arranged thematically and conceptually rather than chronologically; paintings, sculpture, furniture, wall hangings, found objects and other media are intriguingly juxtaposed in the museum's 35 galleries.

The treasures in the Wyckoff Porcelain Room are arranged by color, shape and artistic theme. Visitors will see painted wood screens created by Tlingit Indians, 18th-century tapestries depicting mythical animals and a coffin in the shape of a Mercedes Benz. Some of the pieces feature videos about their creators. Noteworthy special exhibitions are scheduled throughout the year.

An audio guide to the permanent collection is free with admission. Parking is available at the Russell Investment Center building garage beneath the museum; enter on Union Street between 1st and 2nd avenues.

Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
