Volunteer Park is entered at E. Galer St. and 15th Ave. E. or at E. Prospect and 14th Ave. E. The park, designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers architectural firm and completed in 1912, encompasses 48.3 acres of formal gardens and extensive lawns on Capitol Hill. The Asian Art Museum is on the grounds. Volunteer Park Conservatory, 1400 E. Galer St., has a large collection of cactuses, succulents, orchids and tropical and subtropical plants. A spiral stairway leads to the top of the 75-foot Volunteer Park Water Tower for an excellent view of the city, its lakes and nearby mountains. Of interest is Isamu Noguchi's Black Sun sculpture. A wading pool, located near the Conservatory and the Asian Art Museum, is open in summer months.
