Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave., offers a comprehensive overview of the Evergreen State's past and present. The museum building, modeled after Tacoma's historic Union Station, was the winning design in an architectural competition. Inside visitors will find hands-on exhibits, walk-through settings and interactive computer displays that replicate the Evergreen State's natural setting, the lifestyles and cultures of its first inhabitants, early exploration and settlement of the land, and the significant individuals and events that were instrumental in shaping the state.

The Great Hall of Washington History takes you on a journey from past to present. Other highlights are walking through a traditional Coast Salish plank house, safely touching a 52-foot electrical tower, riding down the Columbia River courtesy of a large-screen video and one of the state's largest and coolest model train layouts. The view from the outdoor plaza overlooks Thea Foss Waterway, the historic red brick Warehouse District and adjacent Union Station, with indomitable Mount Rainier presiding over all.

Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
