Milwaukee Art Museum is at 700 N. Art Museum Dr. A suspended pedestrian bridge links the museum to downtown Milwaukee at Wisconsin Avenue; the east entrance offers views of Lake Michigan. The graceful, postmodern Quadracci Pavilion was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Soaring above this white marble and glass pavilion is the Burke Brise Soleil, a winglike sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan that unfolds twice daily. Windhover Hall is a magnificent cathedral-like space with a vaulted 90-foot-high glass ceiling.

More than forty galleries on four floors hold the museum's vast collection of nearly 30,000 works from antiquity to the present. Permanent collections include Old Masters and 19th- and 20th-century art, American decorative arts, German Expressionism, folk and Haitian art, and American art after 1960. Artists on exhibit include Wisconsin native Georgia O’Keeffe as well as Winslow Homer, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Andy Warhol.

The museum also houses the Herzfeld Center for Photography and Media Arts, featuring a collection of 3,800 works by such masters as Diane Arbus, Walker Evans and Alfred Stieglitz; also included are film and video installations.

Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
