Experience the history, charm and free activities for kids in Savannah. Stroll Forsyth Park's historic green space, delve into Fort Pulaski National Monument's riveting past or engage your teens in an intriguing mix of history and mystery at Bonaventure Cemetery. For the little ones, Tybee Island's sandy beaches offer affordable fun for the entire family. The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge provides the opportunity to engage with nature and spot some local wildlife, while the Savannah Botanical Gardens provides a serene escape full of blooms, nature walks and historic attractions.

And there's more! Nestled in the heart of the city is the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District. While not typically associated with free activities, the kid-friendly waterfront hotel offers a museum-like lobby with an array of art and entertainment, completely free.

Consider children’s ages and interests to design a memorable family getaway in this charming Southern city. From waterfront activities to landmarks steeped in history, you can count on having free things to do in Savannah that not only add fun but also conserve cash for other pursuits.

Bonaventure Cemetery

Savannah, Georgia

Take artsy teenagers to this historic cemetery by the Wilmington River for the ambience. With live oaks, magnolias and azaleas interspersed between rows of intricately carved marble, the eye-catching, 100-acre site is photogenic (and purportedly haunted). It is also the final resting place of songwriter and Capitol Records founder Johnny Mercer.Read More

Forsyth Park

Savannah, Georgia

Enjoy a well-known Savannah historic district park that is full of Southern charm. It features impressive decorative elements like the fountain — dyed green during St. Patrick’s Day — and a playground and splash pad that is perfect for little ones. Older kids, however, might want to play ball on the fields and courts on the south side of the 30-acre park. Whether it's the allure of the Spanish moss-draped oaks, captivating sidewalk chalk art or the joyous community spirit, there's always something to engage the whole family in Savannah's Forsyth Park.

Fort Pulaski National Monument

Fort Pulaski National Monument, Georgia

Featuring cannon demonstrations, tours and nature trails, there are things to do within and outside the historic walls. Kids can sign up to be a Junior Ranger or Junior Civil War Historian to deepen their knowledge of the landmark, which is located between the city of Savannah and Tybee Island. To make this site extra affordable, visit on a fee-free day, such as Veterans Day or the National Monument's Birthday on Oct. 15. Note: Cash is not accepted at the park; use credit, debit or a contactless method of payment.

JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District

Savannah, Georgia

Discover the free activities at this repurposed power plant-turned-hotel. The lobby is a spectacle in itself with fascinating exhibits and a life-size dinosaur, promoting the joy of learning without any additional cost. On the riverside, choose from family-friendly entertainment like live music, historic tours, a self-guided dinosaur adventure or window shopping at boutiques and galleries. Even if you don't stay at this incredible waterfront hotel, you're guaranteed a budget-friendly yet fun family experience.

Savannah Botanical Gardens

Savannah, Georgia

Just a short hop from Savannah's Historic District, discover a garden oasis packed with roses, herbs, perennial plants and seasonal blooms. Enjoy a nature walk, an archaeological exhibit or the historic 1840s Reinhard House. The site, managed by the Savannah Area Council of Garden Clubs, Inc., was created in the late '80s as a volunteer project and also features an amphitheater and pond. You can freely explore the public areas, though groups of 10 or more may incur a small fee.

Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

Hardeeville, South Carolina

Numerous animals call this place home. For an overview, start at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, where you can watch an introductory video and explore exhibits. Then prepare for some wildlife sightings along the 4-mile Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive. Other highlights include ranger programs and a geocache trail — aka an exciting digital treasure hunt using GPS coordinates to find hidden containers or "geocaches." It's a fantastic way to have a hand-on experience at the refuge, combining technology, exploration and fun for all ages!

Tybee Island

Tybee Island, Georgia

Nearby Savannah beaches — fun for all ages — are only a short drive away. South Beach, where you’ll find the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, is a family-friendly choice just off U.S. 80. Another popular one—complete with a scenic lighthouse — is North Beach. Other quieter sites with fewer facilities and no lifeguards, such as Tybee Back River Beach, may be better suited for older children who can swim well.
