Things To Know About Glacier National Park

The northern boundary of the park is formed by the border between the United States and Canada. Together with Waterton Lakes National Park — a sister park in Alberta, Canada — the two parks make up Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two parks are also designated as International Dark Sky Parks, as they offer ideal conditions for stargazing.

There are three main visitor centers inside Glacier National Park. On the east side is St. Mary Visitor Center; on the west is Apgar Visitor Center. The Logan Pass Visitor Center is in the center of the park, at the highest point along Going-to-the-Sun Road .

The 52-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road connects the east and west sections of the park. Often called one of the most scenic highways in the country, the steep, cliff-hugging route has a number of pull-offs and leads to many of the park’s trails and visitor centers.

Be aware that most areas of Glacier National Park have almost no cell phone service. Limited cell service is available in the Apgar/West Glacier area and in St. Mary. It’s best to gas up your car before you arrive, as there are no gas stations within the park.
