Founded in 1905, the Art Gallery of the State of Sao Paulo (Pinacoteca do Estado) is one of Brazil’s most important art museums. Dedicated to 19th and 20th century Brazilian art, the Pinacoteca collection features more than 8,000 pieces, including works by Almeida Júnior, Pedro Alexandrino, and Oscar Pereira da Silva.
The Basics
As well as Brazilian art, the museum features canvases by European artists who were inspired by Brazil, and archives full of documents relating to art history. The art gallery sits within Parque da Luz, a former botanical garden-turned-park that covers an area of 20 acres (8 hectares). Before or after your visit to the museum, take a stroll through the park to admire its ponds, reflecting pools, and 19th-century French sculptures.
