POINT OF INTEREST

Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal (Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal)

Estrada Nacional 10, Azeitão, Setubal, 2925-901

Old stone arches, tall metal silos, and a shady Japanese garden surround Bacalhôa Winery Museum, the main facility of Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal (Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal). These settings, together with art exhibits that range from Angolan landscapes to a collection of centuries-old Portuguese tiles, create a backdrop for wine degustation and your introduction to the heritage of Bacalhôa.

The basics

To visit the Bacalhôa Winery Museum and participate in tastings, you’ll need to take a 1-hour tour. Their tastings include various wines, including the local wine region’s specialty, moscatel. Afterward, you can continue to other wineries in the Setubal District or visit local attractions around Azeitão, such as the tilemakers at Leiveira Azulejos. Most of the Setubal District wine tours include a stop at one of Bacalhôa’s facilities, either the Bacalhôa Winery Museum or Bacalhôa Palace, as one of their several winery stops.

Things to know before you go

  • It’s best to book a guided tour of the museum in advance. Otherwise, you may have to wait for the first available tour spot.

  • Tours of the museum require at least two participants to go ahead.

  • You can purchase combined tickets for the Bacalhôa Winery Museum and Bacalhôa Palace.

How to get there

The Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal wine estate and museum is located in the Azeitão area of Setubal District, bordering Arrábida Natural Park. Driving is the easiest way to reach the estate from Lisbon, and you can get there in roughly 40 minutes. As a last resort, you can take a train from Entrecampos station in Lisbon to Coina and then transfer to buses that will stop outside the winery, but it will take twice as long.

When to get there

Aside from some public holidays, the Bacalhôa Winery Museum is open daily to visitors. The estate’s shop is open for much of the day, while tours to the museum are limited to set times throughout the day. Expect the estate to be busiest during the summer months of July and August as tourists flock to Portugal, while it may be quieter in April or October when tourism drops off.

Visit the Palácio da Bacalhôa

Bacalhôa, as a brand, has many different venues around Portugal, most of which you can visit. Just down the road from the modern Bacalhôa estate is Bacalhôa Palace, a more traditional vineyard estate where you can see gardens, Moorish architecture, and art collections, all drawing inspiration from different parts of the world.
