Bilbao's Santiago Cathedral

Done Jakue Plazatxoa, 1, Bilbao, Bizkaia

Built atop a shrine in the 14th-century, Bilbao's Santiago Cathedral now towers over the original Seven Streets of the city’s Old Quarter. Follow in the footsteps of Camino de Santiago pilgrims and admire the Gothic Revival facade; elaborate portal—known as the Angel Door—on Correo Street; and the 15th-century Gothic cloister.

Thanks to Santiago Cathedral’s status as a significant landmark and its privileged position in Bilbao’s Old Quarter, most city walking tours—which often feature food and drink tastings—include a stop at the cathedral. Choose a private tour and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions about Santiago Cathedral, stop by the Santiago Cathedral as part of a history-themed walking route, or combine your visit with a guided tour of the popular Guggenheim. Independent visitors can take advantage of the multilingual audio guide provided with the cost of admission or attend mass—services are held daily.

  • Mass is held every evening at Bilbao Santiago Cathedral, with a bilingual service taking place on Sunday afternoons.

  • Children aged 13 and below and disabled visitors enter for free.

  • Audio guides and access to the Church of San Antón are included in the cost of admission to Bilbao's Santiago Cathedral.

  • Backpacks, selfie sticks, flash photography, and phone calls are prohibited within the Santiago Cathedral.

  • The path to the cathedral is steep and stepped, so access may not be possible for those with wheelchairs or strollers.

The Santiago Cathedral is situated on the Plazuela de Santiago and is easily accessible on foot or by public transport from most points in the city. The closest metro stations are Casco Viejo and Ribera.

Bilbao's Santiago Cathedral is open daily from morning until evening throughout the year, although it stays open slightly later during the months of July and August. Visit early in the morning or stop by at lunchtime to escape the midday heat. During mass, visits are temporarily halted, so plan accordingly.

Admission to the Santiago Cathedral includes access to the nearby Church of San Antón, which is situated just a 5-minute walk from the cathedral. Completed in the 16th century, the Church of San Antón is dedicated to St. Anthony and features a restored Renaissance facade, 18th-century baroque belfry, and mostly Gothic interior. Explore with an audio guide and enjoy views over the Nervión River.
