Fuerte Amador Cruise Port
Panama City, Panama
Located on an island south of Panama City, Fuerte Amador Cruise Port is an important stopover for cruise ships entering and exiting the Panama Canal. Ten minutes away by car, Panama’s capital city is a vibrant metropolis with energetic nightlife, historic architecture, and some of the country’s finest museums.
The basics
Travelers docking at the Fuerte Amador Cruise Port have access to the best of Panama City, from the Panama Canal to historic Casco Viejo. Longer shore excursions put many of the country’s top attractions within reach. On a day trip, it’s possible to take a historic train towards the Caribbean coast, see UNESCO-listed Portobelo National Park, hike the lush Anton Valley, or visit indigenous communities in the jungle.
Things to know before you go
- Breathable, comfortable clothing is a must, as the weather in Panama City is often hot and humid.
- Shoppers will love this port, since duty-free options are available at the nearby Fuerte Amador Mall.
- Active travelers have lots of options here. The Amador Causeway to the mainland has an off-road path that's popular with walkers and cyclists.
How to get to Panama City from Fuerte Amador Cruise Port
Cruise ships drop anchor off the coast, shuttling travelers to the port in smaller boats. From there, the 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) Amador Causeway links the island port to the mainland. Many hop-on hop-off bus lines also stop at the cruise port, heading to key sites in Panama City. Taxis are another option; be sure to choose a taxi with a working meter or agree on a price prior to departure.
Port information
Many major cruise lines stop here. While Spanish is the official language, English is widely understood at many tourist sites and shops. Prices are listed in Panamanian Balboas, an official currency fixed to the US dollar. US dollar bills are used for paper money, but Panamanians use Balboa coins that are the same size as their US counterparts.
