Goldfish Market (Tung Choi Street)

Yuen Po Street, Mong Kok, Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Located in Kowloon, Goldfish Market (Tung Choi Street) is one of the more unusual streets in Hong Kong. As the name suggests, the street is full of shops and stalls selling goldfish, as well as other types of fish and marine creatures, amphibians, reptiles, and other small animals, along with aquarium supplies and accessories.

The Basics

Tung Choi Street North, also known as Goldfish Street or Goldfish Market, stretches for about 1,000 feet (300 meters) and includes about 40 shops and stalls on both sides of the street. In addition to tanks with different varieties of fish, find wall-to-wall bags of colorful fish and accessories, as well as other animals, from ordinary to exotic.

Even if you’re not in the market for a pet, Goldfish Market is a lively and colorful market worth experiencing. Many visitors combine a visit to Goldfish Street with a stop at other nearby markets, such as the Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, Flower Market, and the Ladies Market, either independently or as part of a sightseeing tour.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Goldfish Market is suitable for families with children, particularly animal lovers.

  • Some shops do not allow photos to be taken.

  • Bring cash as not all vendors take credit cards.

How to Get There

Goldfish Market is located in Kowloon. By public transportation, take the MTR to Mong Kok East Station (exit C) and walk via the footbridge, or to Prince Edward Station (exit B2) and walk east.

When to Get There

Most of the shops on Goldfish Market are open daily from around 10am until around 8pm. If possible, try to visit during the day and at night, as the street looks particularly impressive after dark. Goldfish Street will be particularly busy around festivals such as Chinese New Year, when locals flock to the market to buy a fish for good luck.

Why Goldfish Are So Popular in Hong Kong

Goldfish are thought to bring good luck and fortune, particularly when they are placed in auspicious locations within homes according to the principles of feng shui. Moreover, most Hong Kong residences are too small to house large animals, so fish, and particularly goldfish, make for popular pets.
