Harriet Beecher Stowe House Historic Site is off SR 562 (Norwood Lateral Expwy.) Montgomery Rd. exit, then 3 mi. s.w. on Montgomery Rd. to 2950 Gilbert Ave. The 1833 red brick house served as the residence for Lane Seminary president Rev. Lyman Beecher and his family. Beecher moved his family to Cincinnati in 1832, and Harriet lived in the house several years before her marriage to Lane professor Calvin Stowe in 1836. Later in her life she wrote “Uncle Tom's Cabin,” which greatly influenced the North's opposition to slavery. Hers was a very progressive family—with abolitionists and suffragists in the mix—and the house displays period photographs and exhibits, emphasizing the role she, her family and the college played in the abolition movement at that time.
