The basics
If you're a fan of eco-tourism, Marapendi Natural Park is the perfect spot. You can explore the park's extensive network of trails, which take you deep into its heart. With every step, you'll be surrounded by native plants and a variety of bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for black-billed toucans, parrots, and even sloths. Don’t forget to check out the park’s Reference Center for Environmental Education, which houses immersive exhibits detailing the region's flora and fauna.
Things to know before you go
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. You'll want good traction as you explore the park's trails.
Dress in lightweight, breathable clothing, and don't forget to apply sunscreen. Rio de Janeiro can get quite hot, so staying hydrated is essential.
The park is home to various insects, especially in the rainy season. It's a good idea to carry insect repellent to make your visit more enjoyable.
How to get there
Located 18 miles (30 kilometers) west of central Rio de Janeiro, the most convenient way to reach Marapendi Natural Park is by taxi or rideshare. If you prefer public transport, head to the nearest bus stop, Padre Alfredo Gonzales, serviced by buses 302, 309, 552, 805, and SP805. From there, it’s an easy walk to the park’s entrance.
When to get there
Marapendi Natural Park is typically open Tuesday to Sunday, from 8am to 5pm. To make the most of your visit, consider going in the morning or late afternoon. The temperatures are more comfortable during these times, and the wildlife is more active. As for the best season to visit, any time of year is suitable, but keep in mind that the rainy season typically falls between December and March.
Visit Tijuca, where nature and adventure collide
If you don’t have the energy to visit Marapendi Natural Park independently, you can still experience the diverse wildlife and exotic flora in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Opt for a tour of Tijuca National Park. Tour options include guided walks, challenging hikes, and even Jeep safaris. However you decide to experience the park, you’ll have the opportunity to explore well-maintained trails, discover ancient ruins, and soak in panoramic vistas of the city and coastline.
