Mount Mitchell State Park

Mount Mitchell State Park is at Milepost 355, near Burnsville, N.C. The park encompasses the 6,684-foot summit of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River, and a portion of its slopes. The mountain was named for Dr. Elisha Mitchell, who fell to his death in 1857 while attempting to prove the accuracy of elevation measurements he had recorded in prior decades. The 1,996-acre state park offers numerous hiking trails. Guided hikes and interpretive programs are offered seasonally. Facilities include an interpretive center, an observation platform and a museum. In spring and winter check road conditions before visiting. Food is available May-Oct. Parking is available near the summit. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
