The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) opened in 1995 with the goal of researching, collecting, preserving, and displaying contemporary art from Japan and around the world. It’s the largest modern and contemporary art museum in Japan, with three floors showing temporary exhibits and two featuring artworks from the permanent collection.
The Basics
The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo building is an attraction in itself, with its geometric metal and glass construction beside a beautiful green park The galleries have high ceilings, which are used creatively to display the art. Most visitors spend a half-day here, combined with a sightseeing trip to nearby neighborhoods such as Ginza or the sumo center of Ryogoku.
Things to Know Before You Go
There is an on-site library with around 100,000 art-related books. You can search the catalog on the museum’s website before your visit.
As it would be easy to spend a whole day here, there’s an on-site restaurant and café.

How to Get There
The museum is on the edge of Kiba Park in eastern Tokyo. The easiest way to get there is by subway. Take the Tozai line to Kiba station, or the Oedo line to Kiyosumi-shirakawa station. It’s a short walk from either station.

The museum is periodically closed for renovations, so check the website before visiting. With three floors displaying temporary exhibits, there’s often something new to see. Check the website to see what’s will be showing when you go.
