Museum of Tequila and Mezcal (Museo del Tequila y el Mezcal)
Mexico City, Distrito Federal, 14060
Mexico City’s Museum of Tequila and Mezcal (Museo del Tequila y el Mezcal) offers visitors a lesson in the history, production, and significance of Mexico’s much-loved, agave-based spirit. The museum also covers Mexican history and pop culture, with exhibits on its location at Plaza Garibaldi and los mariachi.
The Basics
The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal features a permanent exhibit hall on the first floor showcasing the tequila- and mezcal-production process step-by-step. By law, tequila can only be made using blue agave, while mezcal can be made with around 30 different types of agaves. Visitors will have the chance to sample multiple tequila and mezcal varieties, including silver, reposado, and añejo tequila at the upstairs bar and tasting room, with a view overlooking Plaza Garibaldi.
Things to Know Before You Go
Visit the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal independently or as part of a Mexico City sightseeing tour with round-trip transport included.
The museum offers restrooms, a shop, and an upstairs bar and tasting room.
Plaza Garibaldi comes alive at night, but this is also the time pickpockets come out. Be mindful of belongings and surroundings to avoid theft.
How to Get There
The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal is located in Plaza Garibaldi, just north of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the closest metro station is Garibaldi (line 8). Travelers who want to avoid the hassle of navigating public transport can opt for a tour with hotel pickup and drop-off included.
When to Get There
The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal is open daily from 11am to 10pm (and until midnight on weekends). The best time to visit is after dark, when mariachi bands entertain the crowds that gather in the square, and solo musicians frequently perform in the museum’s upstairs bar and tasting room.
Plaza Garibaldi
Plaza Garibaldi is a historic square in downtown Mexico City that’s known for live local music. In the evenings, crowds gather to drink, socialize, and listen to mariachi bands belt out traditional tunes. The perimeter of Plaza Garibaldi is lined with tequila joints, and the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal stands on the west side of the square, just behind the agave garden.
