The Basics

The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal features a permanent exhibit hall on the first floor showcasing the tequila- and mezcal-production process step-by-step. By law, tequila can only be made using blue agave, while mezcal can be made with around 30 different types of agaves. Visitors will have the chance to sample multiple tequila and mezcal varieties, including silver, reposado, and añejo tequila at the upstairs bar and tasting room, with a view overlooking Plaza Garibaldi.

When to Get There

The Museum of Tequila and Mezcal is open daily from 11am to 10pm (and until midnight on weekends). The best time to visit is after dark, when mariachi bands entertain the crowds that gather in the square, and solo musicians frequently perform in the museum’s upstairs bar and tasting room.

Plaza Garibaldi

Plaza Garibaldi is a historic square in downtown Mexico City that’s known for live local music. In the evenings, crowds gather to drink, socialize, and listen to mariachi bands belt out traditional tunes. The perimeter of Plaza Garibaldi is lined with tequila joints, and the Museum of Tequila and Mezcal stands on the west side of the square, just behind the agave garden.
