POINT OF INTEREST

North Rhine-Westphalian State Parliament (Landtag)

Platz des Landtags 1, Düsseldorf, Rhine River, 40221

Dusseldorf’s North Rhine-Westphalian State Parliament, aka the Landtag NRW, is a parliament building where many of the state’s democratic decisions are made. Serious stuff aside, most visitors come to see its clockwork-like architecture, where circles and curves abound. The contemporary exterior is best admired from up high; luckily, Dusseldorf’s premier viewing platform—the Rhine Tower—is next door.

The basics

If you are interested in German politics or parliamentary activity, you can visit the inside of the Landtag during the “visitor weekends.” Sites like the Plenary Hall, circular chambers, select committee rooms, and the press conference room can usually be seen, and there are dedicated visitor service staff around. During these weekends, there are also 45-minute guided tours offered each hour.

For those more interested in Landtag’s architecture, the best way to admire it is from up high. The building is next to the Rhine Tower, which offers the perfect perch to scope the building’s curves and snap pictures. Dusseldorf Segway tours and other sightseeing tours often swing past the two sites, giving the lowdown on the architecture in the commentary.

Things to know before you go

  • Public members can enter for free and enjoy a guided tour on the visitor weekends.

  • Visitors can find interactive information about the NRW state and its parliamentary work from different pillars inside the building.

  • The Landtag NRW is barrier-free for wheelchair users and equipped with elevators and accessible restrooms. Visitors with reduced mobility should check specific access requirements directly with the site before a visit.

How to get there

The Landtag NRW is found near the Rhine River and the Rhine Tower and is easy to reach by public transit. From Düsseldorf Station, take tram #708 or #709 to the Landtag/Kniebrücke stop. From elsewhere, tram #706 and buses #726, 835, and 836 all stop at the site. Travelers with their own cars will find paid parking lots nearby.

When to get there

Visitors can check out the Parliament’s Forum, which is open on select weekends throughout the year between mid-morning and early evening. If you want to visit inside, contact the Landtag NRW directly to discover the visitor weekend dates. There’s no need to book in advance. For those who just want to see the site from outside and above, head to the neighboring Rhine Tower, open daily from mid-morning until nearly midnight.

The Rhine Tower revolving restaurant

If you’re looking for dining options after a visit to the Landtag NRW, head next door to the Rhine Tower. After gazing from the observation deck, you can sit at the revolving restaurant experience QOMO. Worthy of a special occasion, the restaurant serves Japanese fusion food and has full-circle city views.
