Ohakune Old Coach Road (Old Coach Road Bike Trail)

The Ohakune Old Coach Road is a bicycle and hiking track with a fascinating history. It was constructed in 1906 to ‘connect’ two ends of the North Island’s main trunk railway line, which were separated by rugged terrain. Railway passengers would transfer between the two lines by horse and carriage. Once the railway lines were connected, the track was abandoned. That is, until it was revived as a hiking and cycle track in recent years.
The Basics
The Ohakune Old Coach Road was only used for its original purpose—to connect two unlinked stretches of the railway—for about two years, but its scenic and historic value has been recognized, and now visitors can hike or bike the trail. It takes about four-five hours to hike, or two-and-a-half hours to cycle. Features of interest along the way include a cobbled road, steel viaducts, and the remains of railway bridges, as well as dense native bush and impressive views of the Central Plateau region. Most travelers embark on this adventure independently, with their travel companions.
Things to Know Before You Go
- The trail is categorized as easy-moderate for both hikers and cyclists. It’s 9.3 miles (14 kilometers) each way.
- Cyclists should be aware that you will be sharing the trail with hikers.
- The track passes beneath the main trunk railway line. While rail traffic in this area is not heavy, when you do see or hear a train approaching, be careful of any debris from the train.
- Bikes can be hired from shops in Ohakune.
How to Get There
The trail starts from the Ohakune Railway Station, which can be reached by car, or is a stop on the Northern Explorer Auckland to Wellington train. From Ohakune Station, follow the footpath to the Mangawhero River Bridge and cross over onto Old Station Road. The trail begins here.
When to Get There
The Central Plateau of the North Island can get cold in the winter, with snow a not-uncommon sight. Therefore, it’s best to do this trail in the spring, summer, or autumn; that is, between September and May.

Perhaps the most famous adventure in the Central Plateau area of New Zealand’s North Island is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a day hike that passes through incredible volcanic and forested landscapes. On a clear day, there are stunning views of three volcanoes—Ngauruhoe, Tongariro, and Ruapehu. The hike shouldn’t be underestimated and weather conditions can change quickly fast, so be prepared.
