Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art

Tokyo, Kanto

While the name doesn’t give this away, Tokyo’s Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art focuses on French artist Georges-Henri Rouault, known for his early 20th-century works. His pieces are displayed in the permanent Rouault Gallery, and the museum also hosts special exhibitions directly or indirectly related to Rouault, who was associated with the expressionist and fauvist art movements.

The basics

Along with the works displayed in the Rouault Gallery, the museum hosts four special exhibits per year. These encompass themes and movements as varied as architecture, applied arts, ceramics, and Rouault’s artistic inspirations and contemporaries. Though the museum isn’t big, it’s a rich place for art enthusiasts to visit, and most people come independently.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum is wheelchair accessible and has two wheelchairs available to borrow.
  • The gift shop sells a range of items unique to the museum.
  • The museum doesn’t have its own restaurant, but there are others in the building, as well as outside in the surrounding area. It’s also close to the famous Tsukiji Market.

How to get there

The museum is on the fourth floor of the Panasonic Tokyo Shiodome Building, in central Tokyo’s Shiodome district, and the closest train stations are Shimbashi and Shiodome. Since the museum doesn’t have its own parking, either come by public transportation or park at the paid Shiodome City Center parking lots.

When to get there

The museum is open Thursday–Tuesday, from mid-morning until early evening; last admission is 30 minutes before closing time. On some Friday evenings it’s open later—check the calendar on the website for up-to-date information. While the museum is usually closed on Wednesdays, it remains open on this day during some special exhibits.

Visit the Hama-Rikyu Gardens

While you’re visiting the Shiodome district, don’t miss the wonderful Hama-Rikyu Gardens, just south of the museum. The former imperial gardens display many traditional Japanese elements, and provide an interesting contrast with central Tokyo’s skyscrapers in the background. They’re especially attractive in spring and fall, when blossoms and autumn leaves, respectively, add color to the cityscape.
