Texas State Aquarium, 2710 N. Shoreline Blvd. on North Beach, displays thousands of animals representing over 330 species. Visitors to the aquarium enter under a waterfall representing a full submersion into the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphin Bay offers views of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins from above the water and in an underwater viewing room. The Islands of Steel habitat, a replica of an offshore oil platform, features a 125,000-gallon tank with marine animals including sharks, red snapper and barracuda. The immersive Nearshore portrays life at the shoreline, where sand dunes and mangroves meet shallow saltwater habitats that house stingrays, shorebirds and American alligators. Saving Sharks features a large touch exhibit that is home to several species of shark. The OCEARCH Tracking Station allows guests to track tagged shark in real time. During summer months, visitors can cool off at H-E-B Splash Park, a play area with water spray jets, cannons and other features. Guides answer questions about the animals and the aquarium's programs. Changing exhibits, dive shows, several touch pools, feeding demonstrations and hands-on experiences with sharks and stingrays also are available. Rental strollers and wheelchairs are available on a limited supply. Food is available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
