Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park

Patagonia, Los Lagos

Established in 1926, Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is Chile’s oldest national park. Natural highlights include the Osorno, Puntiagudo, and Tronador volcanoes, and Lago Todos los Santos, hailed as one of the most beautiful lakes in Chile.

The basics

Day trips to Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park typically depart from Puerto Varas and most include round-trip transfers, which allow you to focus on the scenery rather than the road. Itineraries typically cover park highlights such as Lago Todos los Santos, the Petrohué Waterfalls, and the Osorno Volcano—some include lunch at a village at the foot of the active volcano. Several excursions take you to the Osorno Ski Center, located 3,937 feet (1,240 meters) above sea level.

Things to know before you go

  • There are several accommodation options within the park, which range from camp sites to lakeside lodges.
  • There are few food shops within the park, with the closest being in the nearby village of Ensenada, so ensure you stock up before you go.
  • Sturdy hiking shoes and a windproof jacket are essential for exploring the park.

How to get there

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is 44 miles (70 kilometers) from the town of Puerto Varas; you can reach the park by car via Ruta 225. Buses depart from the San Bernardo/Walker Martinez stop in Puerto Varas and take you all the way to Lago Todos los Santos. The closest airport is Puerto Montt.

When to get there

Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is a year-round destination that’s open Monday-Sunday from morning until early evening. Throughout the year, you can expect cool temperatures that prove perfect for hiking.
