Vienna Boys Choir (Wiener Sängerknaben)
Augartenspitz 1, Vienna, Vienna, 1010
With over 500 years of history and a big reputation, the Vienna Boys Choir brings Vienna’s musical traditions to the world. They’re globe-trotting singers, but watching the Vienna Boys Choir perform in their hometown is especially remarkable, whether they’re singing at Sunday Mass at Hofburgkapelle or giving a show at the choir’s concert hall.
The basics
The Vienna Boys Choir is divided into four touring choirs, so it’s possible to catch a show in Vienna even when other choristers are singing at international events. There are two main performance spaces: Hofburgkapelle (the Hofburg Chapel), where the choir regularly sings at Mass; and MuTh, a dedicated concert hall. Advance bookings are essential, and tickets are available for purchase online.
Things to know before you go
- Sung Mass is part of the full religious service; if you prefer music only, opt for a performance at MuTh.
- The choir performs above and behind the congregation at Mass, and the singers are out of sight for much of the service.
- Photos are not allowed during Mass, but the choir performs a final song at the front of the church with photos and video invited.
How to get there
The Hofburg Chapel is set within the Imperial Palace (Hofburg) at Michaelerkuppel in central Vienna. It's easy to reach by bus, tram, and underground—the closest station is Herrengasse, with service from the U3 underground line. MuTh, the concert hall, is located at Am Augartenspitz 1 in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district, close to the Taborstrasse underground station, with service from the U2 line.
When to get there
Sunday Masses with the Vienna Boys Choir are held from September to June, and other performances are held regularly throughout the year. The most sought-after seats are best reserved months in advance, but budget-friendly tickets can often be purchased the week—or even the day—of the choir performance. If you’re attending Mass, plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before it begins.
Where to Sit at the Vienna Boys Choir Mass
You can pick out seats when booking tickets, and booking well in advance gives you the best options. On the first floor, most seats have good views; on the first and second balconies, try for seating in the first few rows. Unless you’re seated upfront, the side rooms have somewhat obstructed views. The stairs to the balcony are steep and narrow, making ground-floor seating a good choice for visitors who prefer to avoid them.
