Food, Drink, Prices
Many clubs have an admission fee which may sometimes include the cost of your first drink, while others have a minimum cover
charge to prevent people occupying a table just for the music. Some serve food and some don't. Some take table reservations
and some don't. In most cases, prices are pretty high, and any food served is usually fairly average.
Open or Closed? As with restaurants, many music clubs close in midsummer when some of the owners and musicians go to work in the more lucrative Greek islands. Nights of opening can change too, from season to season, so ring to check before making a special journey. Rembetika The blues came to Greece in the 1920s when the exchange of populations with Turkey brought many displaced Greeks to slum districts such as Piraeus. Their Middle Eastern music blended with traditional Greek music to produce a mournful sound and lyrics that deal with the harsh lives of the poor and dis possessed. Dora Stratou Dora Stratou devoted her life to preserving traditional Greek dance and music, amassing a collection of some 3,000 dance costumes in the process. Her dance troupe first performed in 1953 and, although she herself died in 1988, her memory lives on in the summer performances of Greek dance at the theatre which now bears her name. |
