National Parks and World Heritage Sites

Because of its superb scenery, vast size and low population density, Australia has well over 3,000 national parks and reserves. Some of these - including Kakadu in the Northern Territory - are remote and wild; some encompass large expanses of spectacular coastline; while others, such as Sydney's magnificent Ku-ring-gai Chase, preserve unspoiled bushland and wildlife habitats just a short drive from the cities.
Australia also has 12 UNESCO World Heritage listings, the most coveted international conservation status. Sites are included on this list for their outstanding natural or cultural significance, and Uluru-Kata Tjuta (Ayers Rock and The Olgas) and the Great Barrier Reef are among Australia's inclusions. Such unique and superbly scenic regions offer some of the continent's best natural environments and these are wonderful places to escape from the world of cities, traffic and overcrowding.
