All Tastes Catered For
`Entertainment' in Australia covers everything from highbrow opera to high-spirited pubs and sporting activities of every
kind. Most of the more cultural events are focused on the capital cities, but larger country towns, especially in New South
Wales and Victoria, can offer surprisingly good theatre. Australians have a great love of gambling and there are casinos in
each of the main capital cities, as well as in Alice Springs, Launceston and on the Gold Coast.
What's On The best way to find out about the entertainment scene in each capital city is to study the local newspaper. The Sydney Morning Herald, for example, includes entertainment information every day, but this paper's Friday Metro guide is a comprehensive look at what's on during the coming week. The major newspapers also include information on where to obtain tickets for concerts and other events. The Movies The cinema is alive and well in Australia. You can see all the latest releases soon after they have opened in the northern hemisphere. Keep a look-out, too, for some of Australia's excellent home-grown movies - films like Shine, Babe, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Muriel's Wedding and Moulin Rouge took the film world by storm. Check the various newspaper entertainment pages for full details of films and venues. Outdoor Entertainment Australia's climate lends itself to outdoor entertainment, and there are many alfresco events for visitors to enjoy. In Melbourne, regular events take place at the Myer Music Bowl; in Sydney, January brings open-air opera and classical music concerts in The Domain; while Darwin offers `Sunset Jazz' each Sunday from April to September. There are also free concerts in public spaces and parkland throughout the nation in the summer months. |
