Ateneumin Taidmuseo
The Ateneumin taidmuseo (Ateneum Art Museum) is housed in a handsome 19th-century building. Vincent van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani
and Paul Cézanne are represented, among many other international figures from the 19th century to the 1960s; but it is the
significant collection of Finnish art, from the 18th century to the mid-1960s, that enhances the museum. There are some powerful
works by realist painters Fanny Churberg and Albert Edelfelt, such as Edelfelt's gossiping group, Women of Ruokalahti on the
Church Hill. Finland's master Akseli Gallen-Kallela dominates with works such as the seductive Aino-Taru, The Aino Myth and
the earthy and very Finnish A New House. Gallen-Kallela pupil Hugo Simberg's mildly disturbing and surrealistic The Wounded
Angel is another highlight. Wäinö Aaltonen's bronze of the Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi overpowers Room 24.
