Lakeside City Zurich surrounds the northern end of Zürichsee (Lake Zurich), from which the Limmat river flows to bisect the city. The oldest part lies on either side of the river, with the 19th-century grandeur of the Bahnhofstrasse area on the west. East of the river, gentle hills rise to the impressive university complex, while wide boulevards, parks and gardens run along the lake. A tram ride is an essential experience; these efficient vehicles ensure that city streets are virtually traffic-free. If you feel in need of exercise, you can borrow a free bike from four places in the city, including the main railroad station (daily 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., May through October; ID and deposit of SF20 required). |
