Gen. Anthony Wayne chose a location in the Maumee Valley for Fort Defiance, which he built in 1794. The site of the fort is marked by plaques and stones in the Defiance city park. Old earthworks are visible. Other marked historic sites in Defiance include Fort Winchester, built in 1812 by Gen.
