DescriptionNamed after the colossal rock formation that towers over the John’s River Gorge, Blowing Rock was incorporated in 1889. This Blue Ridge Mountains summer resort boasts picture-postcard scenery, pleasant weather, art festivals and—of course—recreational opportunities galore. Authors Margaret Mitchell and Pearl S. Buck got in touch with their respective muses here, and 19th-century artist Elliott Daingerfield whiled away summers vacationing and teaching art classes while painting the vivid, symbolic North Carolina landscapes for which he is best known.
On select Saturdays from May through October, admire the Art in the Park displays on the American Legion grounds or head over to Memorial Park and groove to the tunes during a Sunday Concert in the Park. Specialty shops brimming with antiques, art and crafts await those in search of souvenirs.
Blowing Rock's refreshingly cool summer temperatures are perfect for golfing, camping, fishing, biking, rafting, swimming and other outdoor activities. The Blowing Rock Trout Derby in April kicks off the sport fishing season. Cheer on your favorite equine at the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, held during the summer. In winter bundle up and set out for a day of skiing, snowboarding or ice-skating at Appalachian Ski Mountain, 940 Ski Mountain Rd.; phone (828) 295-7828, or (800) 322-2373 for reservations.
