Settled in the mid-1800s, Chalk River was named for a tributary of the Ottawa River. Lumber, pulp and paper mills as well as the Canada Central Railway and farming sustained the town's economy until 1945, when the first nuclear reactor outside the United States began operation nearby. The village is presently known as one of the world's foremost research centers in the field of nuclear energy.
