DescriptionA lumber and manufacturing town, Chemainus added tourism to its economy with the creation of murals. More than 40 professional paintings on the walls of buildings portray the history of the Chemainus Valley. Subjects range from First Nations people to dramatic depictions of the logging industry.
Begun by local artists, the series of murals has attracted artists from around the world. Recent additions include interpretations of images created by noted Canadian artist Emily Carr, including a trompe l'oeil mural on the wall of the Chemainus Theatre. Walking tour maps can be bought at the kiosk in the central parking area. Prearranged guided tours and horse-drawn carriage tours also are available for a fee; phone (250) 246-5055 or (250) 246-0063.
The Chemainus Theatre offers dramas, comedies and musical productions; phone (250) 246-9820 or (800) 565-7738.
