DescriptionCochrane functions as an outfitting center for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and nature excursions into the northern wilderness and Hudson Bay region. Destroyed by fire two times 1910-16, the town has developed into a lumbering and rail center.
Economically, the railways have been the lifeblood of Cochrane since its founding at the turn of the 20th century. The Ontario Northland Railway connects it with Moosonee, an isolated town in the roadless region near the Arctic tidewaters at James Bay as well as linking it with other cities bordering the northern wilderness.
