DescriptionDuring the almost 3 years of British occupation of Newport in the Revolutionary War, Middletown accommodated British Green End Fort and served as the eastern terminus of the British Newport defense lines. A plaque describing the fort's history is all that remains of the site on Vernon Avenue.
Purgatory Chasm, a narrow cleft between the rock ledges of Easton Point off Purgatory Road, has a scenic overlook. Bird’s Eye View Helicopters , 211 Airport Access Rd., provides aerial tours of the Newport mansions, area lighthouses and scenic coastline; for reservations phone (401) 843-8687.
