Description
New Haven was laid out by the Puritans in 1638 in nine equal squares; the central square, or Green, was reserved for the public. Historic buildings are scattered throughout this venerable city, not the least of which are those comprising distinguished Yale University. On the whimsical side, this is the place where the corkscrew, lollipop, steamboat and steel fishhook were invented.
Many popular actors, musicians and dancers have debuted at the Shubert Theatre, 247 College St. This grand old dame is also known as the “Birthplace of the Nation's Hits”; phone (203) 562-5666 or (800) 736-2663. Other venues include the Yale Repertory Theatre, 1120 Chapel St., (203) 432-1234; and the Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Dr. at the junction of I-95, I-91 and SR 34, (203) 787-4282 or (800) 782-8497.
Theaters, courtyards and outdoor spaces are taken over by the arts during the International Festival of Arts and Ideas each year in June. The two-week festival features music, dance, opera, film, poetry, lectures and family activities in facilities throughout the downtown area.
