DescriptionAlthough small industries and farming contribute to Orono's economy, the main focus of this Penobscot Valley town is the University of Maine. Since its opening in 1868 with 12 students and two teachers, the land-grant institution has grown to an enrollment of more than 11,000. The university is a center for teaching, research, public service and cultural activity.
The Collins Center for the Arts houses the 1,435-seat Hutchins Concert Hall; phone (207) 581-1755. The Maynard F. Jordan Planetarium and Observatory offers multimedia astronomy programs and views of the heavens; phone (207) 581-1341.
