Although small industries and farming contribute to Orono's economy, the main focus of this Penobscot Valley town is the University of Maine. The university is a center for teaching, research, public service and cultural activity.

Jordan Planetarium and Observatory offers multimedia astronomy programs and views of the heavens; phone (207) 581-1341. Other university highlights are the ornamental gardens, anthropological museum, dairy and sheep barns, modern athletic facilities and the largest library in the state.
