Meaning “lover of learning,” Philomath was named after Philomath College, started in 1867 by the United Brethren Church. Closed in 1929, the old college building has been restored and is now home to the Benton County Historical Museum.
The town was incorporated in 1882 and is 5 miles west of Oregon State University in Corvallis. Marys Peak, the highest peak in the Coast Range, is 10 miles west.
