Settled in 1855, Roberval was named for Jean François de la Roque, who served as the first lieutenant general of the king in New France. The town developed into a commercial center for the western portion of lac St-Jean County.
In late July the Lac St-Jean International Crossing (Traversée Internationale du lac St-Jean), a 40-kilometre (25-mi.) swimming marathon, takes place between Péribonka and Roberval. Swimmers from around the world compete in the event; phone (418) 275-2851 for information.
