The Monroe County Courthouse, in the center of Courthouse Square, was built in 1896 and is an example of Victorian architecture. The courthouse is in the middle of an eight-block historic district that preserves late 19th- and early 20th-century buildings. The Monroe County Museum and Genealogy Room, 126 E. Johnston St., is a restored 1896 Victorian depot; phone (478) 994-5070. Its museum features railroad memorabilia and exhibits about local history.

The Rum Creek Wildlife Management Area, 7 miles east on SR 18, is 8,100 acres on Lake Juliette. High Falls State Park, 11 miles north on High Falls Road just off I-75, features a scenic waterfall.
