York Harbor
The harbor itself, with the town wharves and marina, remains as busy now as in the 18th century, when it was the Yorks' marketplace and the scene of lively market fairs. It is a favored stopover among yachtsmen and an equally popular starting point for deep-sea fishing trips.
One block south of SR 1703 and US 1 a footpath leads to Wiggly Bridge, a restored suspension bridge spanning the York River. From York Harbor, Long Sands Beach extends northeastward past York Beach toward Cape Neddick Light, popularly known as the Nubble Light. One of the most photographed lighthouses in Maine, the Nubble extends a rocky thumb into the sea; from a tiny island just off its tip the Cape Neddick Light, built in 1879, once guided seamen.
The Sayward-Wheeler House at 9 Barrell Ln. Ext., open the second and fourth Saturday of each month from June to mid-October, contains antique furniture and items brought back as booty from the expedition against the French at Louisbourg in 1745; phone (207) 384-2454.
