Carrizozo
Nine miles northeast via US 54 and SR 349 is the ghost town of White Oaks. For 20 years after the original gold strike on nearby Baxter Mountain in 1879, White Oaks was a substantial community with stone buildings, two banks, four churches, four newspapers and more than 50 established businesses. Although White Oaks faded with the gold market in the 20th century, one of the first strikes—the Old Abe Mine—produced $3 million in gold until it closed around 1960.
