Bottineau
Lake Metigoshe State Park and the Turtle Mountains offer bicycling, camping, hiking, hunting, golf, downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and water sports opportunities. A whimsical artistic tribute to the Turtle Mountains and to a favorite winter pastime is in the city park on East 10th Street—a 30-foot-tall statue of Tommy the Turtle riding a yellow snowmobile.
North Dakota Scenic Byway/CR 43 leads through the Turtle Mountains to the International Peace Garden. On the western end of the scenic byway, just minutes north of Bottineau, is Mystic Horizons, which has been likened to a 21st-century Stonehenge.
At Fourth and Sinclair streets, in front of the rectory of St. Marks Catholic Church, stands a memorial to the four chaplains of the USS Dorchester. A plaque on a concrete obelisk surrounded by pillars tells how the four—a Catholic priest, a rabbi and two Protestant pastors—gave their life jackets to four passengers when the troop transport ship was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Greenland in 1943. A World War I veteran who later became a pastor at St. Marks was so impressed by the actions of the four chaplains that he had the memorial erected to honor their memories.
