Cheraw
Gen. William T. Sherman's Union troops occupied Cheraw during the Civil War and were so taken by its charming atmosphere that they spared it from destruction. More than 50 antebellum houses and buildings and many late 19th- and early 20th-century structures can be found in the historic district, which encompasses 213 acres in the center of town. The original town green and parish church, Old St. David's, still grace Cheraw.
Local history exhibits and a tribute to native son Dizzy Gillespie are displayed at the Lyceum Museum on Market Street. A large bronze statue on the town green pays further homage to the late jazz musician. Keys to the museum and Old St. David's Church can be picked up at the Greater Cheraw Chamber of Commerce, 221 Market St.
With more than 7,000 acres, Cheraw State Park on US 52 provides numerous opportunities for outdoor activity. Amenities include an 18-hole golf course and equestrian campsites.
