Abingdon
The Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail follows one of the traditional footpaths for 34 miles along a former railbed of the Virginia-Carolina Railroad. Beginning in Abingdon, the trail is popular with hikers, bicyclists, runners and horseback riders. A 15-mile section provides an easy hike on winding trails leading to Damascus.
The community's 20-square-block historic district contains many museums, craft shops, art studios, galleries and lodgings housed in 19th-century buildings. The area is a thriving arts community and includes the Arts Depot on Depot Square, which offers changing exhibits. In early August, the Virginia Highlands Festival offers an antiques market and a variety of art competitions.

Shopping
The Holston Mountain Artisans (214 Park St.) offers regionally made wares; phone (276) 628-7721. The downtown district is known for its antiques and locally owned specialty shops. A farmers market draws crowds on Tuesday afternoons and Saturday mornings, late April through Thanksgiving; on Saturday morning in December; and the first and third Saturday, January 1 to late April.
