Shawano

With its rolling hills beckoning cross-country skiers and its 300 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, Shawano is popular for winter recreation. Summer water sports include whitewater rafting on the Wolf River, trout fishing on the Embarrass and Red rivers and boating on 6,100-acre Shawano Lake The Navarino Nature Center, 10 miles south to W5646 Lindsten Rd., in Shiocton, offers bicycling and nature trails as well as cross-country skiing in winter; phone (715) 758-6999.

Two former railroad corridors, now serving as recreational trails, pass through Shawano. The Mountain-Bay State Trail and the Wiouwash State Trail are open to hikers all year and to other recreational users seasonally; a fee is charged. Phone (715) 526-5216.
